Skype
Description
Skype revolutionized digital communication since its launch in 2003, introducing high-quality voice and video calls over the Internet. It enabled users to connect across the globe from their computers, tablets, or Xbox devices using VoIP technology, and became synonymous with cross-platform communication.
Skype supported instant messaging, group video chats, and file sharing. Users could send messages with emoticons, edit or delete recent messages, and chat history synchronized across devices. Group video calls could host dozens of participants, and screen sharing enabled remote collaboration.
Privacy and accessibility were also strong points. Skype offered live subtitles, call recording, and private conversations with optional end-to-end encryption. It used AES encryption and RSA certificates to protect communications.
Skype included innovative features such as real-time translation via Skype Translator, which translated voice and text in multiple languages during calls. Integration with Bing and AI Copilot features enhanced chats with smart replies, translation, and content generation embedded within the app.
Skype remained in use until May 2025, when Microsoft officially retired it, directing users to migrate to Microsoft Teams. This marked the end of a platform that for over two decades shaped how people connected online.
